Private Genetic Testing Services - A Statement by the HGC
In November 2007, the Human Genetics Commission (HGC) issued a statement about private genetic tests 'that claim to predict the onset of disease or indicate a heightened risk of serious conditions, or, alternatively, to offer peace of mind and the promise of a long and active retirement'. The statement was issued in response to concerns about such tests’ 'efficacy, utility and implications for individuals and their families'. The Human Genetics Commission has produced, in conjunction with the statement, a useful list of questions to help individuals decide whether a buying a private health related genetic test is appropriate for them.
